[...] Seavus, an enterprise software developer based in Sweden, simultaneously launched a new mind mapping program that is available in desktop and web-based versions in April, 2009. Called DropMind, these programs are well-designed and easy to use. Significant features include the ability to conduct Google and Delicious searches from within DropMind; you can also search Flickr and Live to locate images to add to your mind maps. In addition, DropMind offers seamless integration between the desktop and web-based versions of its application; all that’s required is a single click on a “synchronize” button and the program does the rest. In early December, Seavus launched version 1.1 of DropMind, with additional business features, including support for task information, map parts and an Application Programming Interface (API), which will make it possible for other developers to add functionality to DropMind. Click here to read my review of DropMind. [...]

Embedded picture search seems a killer feature! On the other hand, I am not going to miss the "insert" key - this de facto "standard" should be long gone. On notebooks this key is usually awkwardly placed, on the full keyboard I usually remap it to something much more useful.

Way to many mind mapping apps give you no choice over the shortcuts or key combinations and are quite limited in the area of the keyboard navigation. Funny how apps meant to be productivity boosters kill the productivity in the very first place themselves. Before you recall the particular key sequence or move the mouse or find the right menu entry, the idea may be gone. Pardon my rant, but this seems like a typical MS Windows idiosyncracy and monopolist approach "my way or the highway" - on X-Window free key remapping is a standard. Opera browser may not be everybody's choice, but therein you decide how do you want to use your keyboard. I wish I had the same in the mind-mapping world!

pfs.

Remember that "Real man do not use menus"? In Windows, they need not, they only have to learn hundreds of drastically different keysets for every application and cannot even change it.

Hi Chuck,

Thanks for the great post. Seavus DropMind is continuing its development and will be better and better each day. Once the Beta version will be finished, I hope you'll enjoy the fully functional and stable applications and you will really like it.

I must say that at the time being, drag and drop functionality is supported in the web application. You can move subtopics wherever you want. You might have experienced some kind of issue with this functionality and were not able to test it. Please try again to see if it works for you now.

The issue which Seth have experienced is most probably related to the Silverlight compatible OSs and Browsers. Some of our support representatives will contact Seth in order to solve this kind of issue.

Additionally, I'm to happy to announce that Mac and Linux versions are on their way and will be available in the beginning of May. I hope that this is great info for you.

Thank you once again for this great post.

Have a nice day,
Natalija

Hi, that is really intersting. I am currently working on a social, web mapping application that have some common point with dropmind. Nevertheless, pearltrees is really social, meaning that webmaps cross each others when they have common URL. Thus, pearltrees' community is creating the first living map of the web. Hope you will be interested in pearltrees. F

I was involved in the private beta of DropMind, at least in theory I was. I was excited that there was a new Mindmapper and looked forward eagerly to trying it out. Each time I logged into the web client, I was presented the page to select a map. Once I selected a map, it went into some sort of loading state, where it stayed. I let it stand in a browser tab literally for hours, in case it was just incredibly slow, but it never came back. I did this several times, each time after a week or two, with the same result. I'll keep trying, but I don't expect much.

On a related topic, Mindomo has had quite a nice desktop Mindmapper to complement their web mapper for quite some time, now. It is Air-based, so it runs on my Mac, as well as a Windows machine, which is the only platform DropMind Desktop runs on.

Thanks for the great blog!
