Stephen Shapiro, an innovation expert who I have known for a number of years – and for whom I have a great deal of respect – recently explained in his blog how he uses mind mapping software to manage his personal innovation pipeline – the ideas that he needs to track and manage to grow his innovation consulting business. Some of the advantages he cites for using this tool include:

• The ability to scan all of his opportunities in one place, which helps him to maintain a balanced approach to his business.
• The ability for him to organize his thoughts in any way he wants, at whatever level of detail is most appropriate.
• The ability to maintain a “catch-all” topic for uncategorized opportunities that may be valuable in the future.
