Payman Taei, the founder of Visme, is the host of a new video series called Make Information Beautiful that aims to educate the average business person on the principles of effective design. Visme (read my review) is well-regarded for its extensive web-based toolset for creating beautiful infographics. But according to Taei, even the best designed tool isn’t enough unless users know how to utilize it effectively:
“When an executive wants to create a design, knowing the basic principles can make a huge difference in the final outcome. Most business professionals have little to no design knowledge; you can see this in their presentations and documents,” he explains. “Visual communication is becoming more and more important and we believe everyone should at least have the basic design understanding.”
Taei emphasizes in the introduction video that the purpose of his new Make Information Beautiful series isn’t to convert ordinary business people into graphic designers. Rather, he aims to provide them with actionable advice they can put to use immediately to create attractive visuals that communicate clearly and compellingly.
He also indicates that these instructional videos are agnostic – in other words, you can apply the graphic design principles he’s sharing with any graphic design tool. You don’t need to have a subscription to Visme to benefit from them.
Here are the videos that Visme has published as of this writing:
- The 15 most common design mistakes made by non-designers
- The 5 things you should know to create stand-out visual content
Each video includes a text transcript, so you can save the words of each session to a document, a personal knowledge management tool like Evernote, Bear or OneNote, and an email signup box where you can register to be notified when new Making Information Beautiful Videos become available.
I watched all three videos and I think they fill a real need for business people. Whether you need to create more effective PowerPoint slides, want to professionally embellish your next report with information graphics or you’re trying to create an infographic for your website, you’ll learn a lot from Taei’s clear, concise instructions.
I highly recommend this video series!
