Creative thinking and problem-solving have long been passions of mine. So when I heard Cameron Herold tell the story of how he devoted an entire hallway at his company 800-GOT-JUNK to something called a “Can You Imagine” wall, I was immediately intrigued.
This brainstorming wall turned out to be a way to invite ideas on the future of the business – from the employees who work for it and would be instrumental in powering the company’s growth. The rules were simple: Jot down ideas about where the company could go in the next 10 years. The ideas were in a public place, so everyone could be inspired by them. Existing ideas could serve as stepping stones to additional ones. And all of the company’s employees could help co-create its future.
Herold is known today as “the business growth guru.” But he gained that moniker by accomplishing something astounding: By age 35, he’d already built his first two $100 MILLION DOLLAR companies. By the age of 42, Cameron engineered 1-800-GOT-JUNK?’s spectacular growth from $2 Million to $106 Million in revenue, and 3100 employees— and he did that in just six years.
Clearly, this remarkable entrepreneur wasn’t just pursuing business as usual, but developing some innovative strategies to grow his firms quickly, engage his employees and provide exceptional value for their customers. This idea wall was just one example.
The Can You Imagine wall inspired me so much so that I decided to create my own version of it in the form of a public mind map. In other words, anyone can add ideas to it.
